Recent technological innovations have revolutionized field science in the Arctic. New sensors are providing ever more accurate measurements of a range of parameters including ice thickness, temperature and drift velocity, while real-time communications are delivering our data instantaneously. In addition to discussing some of the latest sensing technologies, I'll discuss how these enhanced observing capabilities are changing the way we can plan and operate field campaigns to address emerging science questions. However, despite the recent advances in airborne and automated monitoring technology, I will also discuss observations that still require boots on the ice.
